Taylor Swift course to be offered at Colorado State University this summer
“It’s a great moment because Taylor Swift is so big right now in the world, not just the US and there’s a lot we can learn,” said Miller De Rutte. “The course will explore her lyrics, her impact globally, particularly in Spanish speaking countries, so it’s sort of an introduction of linguistic through the lens of Taylor Swift.”
The course will take a unique approach of examining Swift’s cultural and musical impact, specifically in Spanish speaking countries and comparing them to different Latin American artists, like Shakira and Bad Bunny.
Students will also dive into Taylor Swift’s songs from all her different eras, but the tricky part is that students will also have to translate them in Spanish.
“I think a lot of people think translation is super easy and that’s definitely not the case. You might get some type of result, but it’s not going to make any sense. Taylor’s lyrics, especially in the later albums are so complex, so it’s going to be a challenge to keep the authenticity and meaning behind it, as well as the rhythm,” said Miller De Rutte.
