The Oscar ceremonies have featured several controversial moments, with the latest being Will Smith taking to the stage to slap Chris Rock last year.
Richard Gere is another famous actor who participated in a controversial Oscar incident, one which led to the Academy’s decision to ban him from the awards.
Back in 1993, Gere used his platform while presenting an award to criticize the Chinese government about the human rights violations underway in Tibet.
“With the knowledge of what a horrendous, horrendous human rights situation there is in China, [and Tibet] I wonder if we could all send love and truth and sanity to Deng Xiaoping right now in Beijing, if maybe he will take his troops, take them away from Tibet and allow these people to live as free, independent people again,” Gere said.
