“Johnny lived life, which is different from just living,” Tina wrote of her nephew, who was her sister’s son.
“Every day, he found something funny or made it so, and you just couldn’t be around Johnny without laughing your head off.”
Johnny died on July 29, 1998 from complications related to HIV. Tina said that they had a memorial for him the following Saturday at Wynn Funeral Home in Galveston, Texas. “Uncle Johnny made my dress,” the 35-time Grammy winner sings, paying homage to Johnny.
Tina became emotional. “I started to cry and smile at the same time, knowing this was what Johnny wanted. To be loved and celebrated. I hugged my daughter, and we raised a toast and danced on it.”
While Beyoncé was on her Renaissance World Tour, Tina said that fans would turn to her and sing the lyrics about Johnny when Beyoncé performed “HEATED.”
“I wished Johnny were there to dance with me because we would have tore it up,” she recalled.
