Prince Harry and Meghan were yesterday given a warm welcome in “a little corner of Africa” that has become a symbol of anti-colonial resistance.
The couple visited the historic north Colombian village of San Basilio de Palenque, which was founded by escaped slaves in the 17th century and became the Americas’ first ‘free town’ for Africans.
As the Mercury hit 30 degrees, the Duke looked like he was struggling with the heat while being introduced to locals, before being treated to a special song and dance show by performers wearing vibrant and traditional African dress.
Local rapper Andris Padilla Julio, 32, performed for the Duke and Duchess. Known by the rap name Afroneto, Padilla is the creator of a style known RFP or Folkloric Palanquero Rap.
He said: “I spoke with Harry and his wife and Francia Marquez about our plan to build an arts performance centre here. I gave them a document with what we want to do and now all they need to do is put in the money that we need.
