The dress was designed by industry icon Ruth E. Carter in various hues of vibrant purples (the color that signifies royalty) with Wakandan hieroglyphs in golden threads woven down the center and sides.
It had a halter silhouette with a sculptural gold collar. Bassett wore Ramonda’s 3-D printed crown atop a isicholo, a traditional hat worn by married Zulu woman.
Carter worked with artist Julia Koerner on the 3-D elements of the look, per vogue. To accessorize, the actress slipped on Ramonda’s striking gold jewelry. Designed by Douriean Fletcher, the pieces including earrings and an adorned collar.
Bassett, whose work on the film earned her the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2023, walked during the Afrofuturism section of the show, which places focus on how Carter and more have interpreted traditional African garments for cinema.
