Taylor Swift was out and about in New York last night wearing Louis Vuitton’s Tambour watch in yellow gold — an interesting choice that says as much about her taste as it does about where Louis Vuitton now sits in the watch world.
Once seen as a fashion accessory, the Tambour has, over two decades, evolved into a symbol of the brand’s horological ambitions. But under Jean Arnault, the brand’s young director of watches, it has been entirely re-engineered.
“Before I started, we called ourselves a manufacturer, but we weren’t really a manufacturer,” as Arnault explains in an exclusive interview in the new issue of Esquire’s standalone publication dedicated to the world of fine watchmaking, The Big Watch Book.
“Four months in, I changed the strategy. We went from making watches with bought-in movements to producing watches that are 85 per cent made by us.”
Today’s Tambour is slimmer, sharper and mechanically advanced — its new LFT023 calibre developed at Louis Vuitton’s own hallowed Fabrique du Temps facilities in Geneva.
