The American actor wasted no time responding. Will Smith shared an Instagram story replying to Sinner with an enthusiastic “I’M IN!” Griekspoor ultimately prevailed 6-7 (3), 7-5, 3-2 to bring Sinner’s title-defence at the ATP Masters 1000 tournament to a premature end.
The opening set was evenly poised, with Griekspoor’s booming serves causing all sorts of problems for the Italian.
Neither could earn a break point, sending the first set into a tiebreak with Sinner finding the edge to go 1-0 up in hot and humid conditions. Sinner came painstakingly close to breaking Griekspoor for the first time early in the second set, but the Dutchman held his nerve to keep it a close battle.
Griekspoor nearly dropped serve in the eighth game with a double fault adding to his problems, but saved three break points to stay in the fight.
