A 64-year-old man died in a California car crash while teaching his 15-year-old daughter how to drive.

According to a preliminary investigation, police said, “a single vehicle, operated by a young driver with a permit, traveled from the upper parking lot of Gelson’s Market, breached a fence barrier, and continued down an embankment before coming to rest on Coast Highway.”

Authorities said an adult passenger in the vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene. The young driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries.

PEOPLE contacted the Orange County Sheriff’s Office and the Laguna Beach Police Department on Wednesday, May 28. According to the reports, Politoski was teaching his 15-year-old daughter how to drive at the time of the incident.

“It’s a tragedy that certainly affects the immediate family, and it expands to our community,” said Laguna Beach Police Department spokesperson Lt. Jesse Schmidt, according to the Laguna Beach Independent.

“It’s a difficult situation when you’re dealing with an accident, and somebody loses their life,” Schmidt added. “A father was being a good parent, trying to teach his daughter how to drive, which resulted in a tragedy like this.
